There are three dimensions of conviction in the book of St. John. The most commonly preached is a conviction of sin. The second and third are rarely preached; that is, a conviction of righteousness. You see, once you become a believer, you need the work of the Holy Spirit to convince you of righteousness. This righteousness is not performance-based like the Old Testament, but right standing with God, based on a sacrifice and because you are now in Christ.
